The Core Route

Nearly every private tour from Marrakech to the Sahara follows the same backbone: cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stop at the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, continue through Ouarzazate and the Dades Valley, then reach the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga for a camel trek and a night (or more) at a desert camp. Where tours differ is in pacing, length, and what happens on either end.

Round Trip or One-Way to Fes?

This is usually the first real decision. A round-trip tour returns you to Marrakech, which suits travelers flying in and out of Marrakech Menara Airport. A one-way tour ending in Fes suits travelers building a wider Morocco trip, continuing on to the imperial cities of the north, or flying out of Fes-Saïs Airport instead. Both routes cover essentially the same desert highlights.

How Many Days Do You Need?

3 Days

The fastest way to genuinely experience the Sahara — one night at a desert camp, with a camel trek at sunset and sunrise over the dunes. It's a lot of driving relative to time at each stop, but it works well if your schedule is tight.

4-5 Days

Adding a day (or two, on the Erg Chigaga route via Zagora) buys you a full day exploring the dunes by 4x4 — visiting nomadic families, hearing Gnawa music in Khamlia, and sandboarding — rather than just an overnight stop. This is our most commonly recommended length for a first Sahara trip.

7+ Days

Longer itineraries fold in more of northern Morocco — Fes, Chefchaouen, Meknes, Casablanca, or the Atlantic coast at Essaouira — turning the desert crossing into one leg of a much fuller Moroccan circuit.

A Simple Way to Decide

If you have 3 days or less to spare and just want a genuine taste of the Sahara, choose a 3-day round trip. If the desert is a priority and you have a bit more time, a 4 or 5-day tour gives you a full day among the dunes rather than a quick overnight. If you're building a longer Morocco itinerary around imperial cities and the coast, a 7-day or longer route folds the Sahara into a complete circuit. And if you'd rather skip the well-worn Merzouga route entirely, ask us about Erg Chigaga — a quieter, more remote dune sea reached via Zagora.

Frequently Asked

Choosing a Marrakech Desert Tour: Quick Answers

How many days do I need for Merzouga from Marrakech?

A round trip takes a minimum of 3 days including one night at a desert camp. 4-5 days is a common sweet spot, adding a full day of 4x4 desert excursions rather than just an overnight stop.

Is 3 days enough for the Sahara Desert from Marrakech?

Yes, for a genuine taste of the Sahara — a camel trek, one night at camp, and sunrise over the dunes — 3 days is enough, though it involves more driving relative to time spent than longer options.

Should I choose a Marrakech to Fes desert tour or a round trip?

Choose a one-way route to Fes if you're continuing your trip northward or flying out of Fes; choose a round trip if you're based in Marrakech for your whole visit or flying out of Marrakech.
