What Is Ait Benhaddou?
Ait Benhaddou is a ksar — a fortified village of densely packed earthen buildings — built from packed red clay and straw along the historic caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Its dramatic silhouette and UNESCO World Heritage status make it one of the best-preserved examples of traditional pre-Saharan earthen architecture anywhere in Morocco, and a regular stop on any route between Marrakech and the desert.
A Famous Film Location
Ait Benhaddou's striking architecture has made it one of the most filmed locations in Morocco, standing in for ancient settings in productions including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Kingdom of Heaven. Ouarzazate, the nearby town nicknamed "Morocco's Hollywood," hosts several major film studios, and it's common to see production crews still working in and around the kasbah today.
What You'll See
A visit typically involves crossing the (usually shallow) Ounila River, then wandering up through the ksar's narrow lanes past shops, a small museum, and the remains of a communal granary at the hilltop, which offers sweeping views back down over the kasbah and surrounding valley. Most of the ksar's original residents have relocated to a more modern village across the river, though a handful of families still live within the old walls.
The Best Time of Day to Visit
Early morning and late afternoon light brings out the deep red tones of the earthen walls far better than the flat light of midday, and most private itineraries time the visit accordingly. If you're traveling with a driver-guide, ask about timing your stop for golden hour if photography is a priority.
